Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941) is considered one of the greatest avant-garde artists of the early 20th century and a pioneer of modern Indian art. Born to a Hungarian mother and Indian father, she trained in Paris and absorbed Post-Impressionism before returning to India, where she developed a singular style fusing Western technique with Indian subject matter. She died at 28, leaving a body of work of haunting psychological power.
