A ruined wall of red-brown stone stands on a headland above a dark sea, its empty window and low arched doorway holding a faint warm light, ivy and scrub spilling down the rock beneath. Two black cypresses lean against the sky behind it, and a scattered flock of birds turns overhead as a shaft of pale storm light breaks through the grey cloud from the upper left. Böcklin returned to the ruin-by-the-sea motif again and again through the 1870s and 1880s — the same brooding stillness that made The Isle of the Dead the most reproduced painting in Europe.
Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901) was a Swiss painter whose brooding mythological landscapes made him the presiding spirit of German Symbolism. His Isle of the Dead hung in Freud's consulting room, Lenin's apartment and Hitler's Chancellery alike; Rachmaninoff wrote a tone poem about it. He painted ruins, tritons and cypresses as if they were memories rather than inventions.
