A blonde woman in an elaborately embroidered red kimono turns to glance back over her shoulder, one hand raised holding an open fan. Green and gold leaf motifs cover the robe, and a large embroidered warrior figure with a pale face is worked in gold and blue thread across its lower half. Round paper fans painted with birds and figures cover the teal wall behind her. Signed and dated lower left, 1876.

Claude Monet (1840–1926) gave Impressionism its name and its longest career. From the 1870s he painted outdoors in the Seine valley and on the Normandy coast, pursuing the changing light of a single motif in series — haystacks, poplars, Rouen Cathedral, the Thames — and from 1890 the garden he built at Giverny, whose water lilies occupied his last twenty-five years.
