A large pale fish lies on a white cloth, its tail raised and its head resting near a copper pot with a domed lid. Beside it, a smaller red fish head with a bright eye rests against a pile of oyster shells, and a dark, slender eel curls in front. A lemon and a knife sit at the right, against a very dark brown background. Manet signs the canvas at the lower right.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
