A man in a black bullfighter's costume with white stockings and black slippers lies flat on his back on a bare, dark floor, one arm outstretched, the other hand on his chest, and his head turned to one side with eyes closed. A pink cloth trails from the outstretched hand, and a dark sword lies near his shoulder at the right. A small patch of red shows at his side. The background is a plain, dark olive-brown void. The signature 'Manet' appears at the lower right.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was the painter around whom modern French art turned. Trained under Couture and steeped in Velázquez and Goya, he scandalised the Salon with Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia (1863), then painted the bars, railways, gardens and flower pieces of contemporary Paris with a flat, direct touch that the Impressionists adopted, though he never exhibited with them. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing. Available handframed in FSC-certified wood with optional float glass, or unframed. Ships worldwide with free delivery to 30+ countries.
