Eyes closed, red halo, hair moving like water in the dark

A woman stands with her eyes closed and her head tilted back, one arm folded behind her, the pale gold of her body emerging from a ground of swirling blue, brown and deep red that moves around her like current. A single band of red circles her hair — halo and headband at once. The face is caught between ecstasy and absence. Munch painted five versions of Madonna between 1892 and 1895 as part of his Frieze of Life; it was denounced as blasphemous on exhibition and is now, with The Scream, the image by which he is known.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) lost his mother and sister to tuberculosis before he was fifteen, and spent the rest of his life painting what he called "the modern life of the soul" — love, jealousy, illness and dread rendered in colours that seem to vibrate. His Frieze of Life cycle, of which this is part, made him the pivotal figure between Symbolism and Expressionism.
