Edward Penfield (1866–1925) led the American poster movement of the 1890s. As art director of Harper's Magazine from 1891 he drew a new poster every month for six years, flat and economical compositions of well-dressed readers, cyclists and coaching scenes that owed as much to Japanese prints as to French lithography. He later illustrated books and designed calendars. His posters are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.
