A woman is seen from behind, her auburn hair swept into a loose knot at the crown. She wears a blue jacket striped vertically in teal, violet and dark blue, its waistband banded with stripes of orange, yellow, green and pink and tied at the back with a blue bow. Her right hand is raised beside her shoulder, fingers loosely curled. Pale, deeply scalloped folds of drapery spread to either side of her at the hem. A square monogram dated 1917 sits at the lower right.

Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was the most uncompromising draughtsman of Viennese Expressionism. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, he exhibited from 1909 and developed an angular, nervous line and a raw treatment of the body — self-portraits, figures, and later townscapes and landscapes of equal intensity. He died in the influenza epidemic of 1918 at twenty-eight, days after his wife. His work is held by the Leopold Museum and the Belvedere in Vienna and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
