Elizabeth Nourse — An Algerian Man | Orientalist Fine Art Print
Elizabeth Nourse (1859–1938) was an American painter and one of the few women to achieve recognition in the male-dominated world of 19th-century Orientalist and figure painting. Trained in Cincinnati and Paris, she travelled extensively in Europe and North Africa, producing portraits of women and domestic life that combine empathy with technical rigour. Her Algerian works — intimate, dignified, free of exoticism — place her in a rare category of Orientalist painters who saw their subjects as fully human.
