George Catlin (1796–1872) was an American painter and writer who devoted his career to documenting Native American cultures across North America. Between 1830 and 1836 he painted over 600 portraits and tribal scenes among more than 50 nations — an irreplaceable ethnographic and artistic record of cultures already being destroyed by westward expansion.
