Shown with Monet's Water Lilies.
Each frame is made to order by one of our framing workshops, so the exact shade and profile may vary slightly from the photos.
The Iowa chief is shown half length in three-quarter view against a clouded sky. His face is painted red with a green handprint across the mouth and cheek, and a roach of red-dyed hair with two eagle feathers rises from a dark fur band. Clusters of white pendant earrings hang beside his jaw, and a necklace of curved claws frames a round white disc at his throat. A white fur collar edges his tan, red-striped hide garment, with a green disc between two red ones at the chest.
The original: oil on canvas, 1844–45, National Gallery of Art.
George Catlin (1796–1872) was an American painter of the peoples of the Plains. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he gave up the law in 1821 to paint portraits. From St. Louis he made five journeys between 1830 and 1836; in 1832 he went up the Missouri River to Fort Union, painting Mandan, Hidatsa, Crow, Assiniboine, Blackfeet and other nations. He showed the resulting Indian Gallery to paying audiences in American cities and, from 1839, in London, Brussels and Paris, where he often staged Native Americans dancing alongside it. Debt forced its sale in 1852; it reached the Smithsonian in 1879. His work is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the American Museum of Natural History.

9 Art Prints was founded by author Arif Anwar around two simple ideas: that great art should reach far beyond the familiar Western canon, and that fine art reproductions should be made with exceptional materials.
So we seek out remarkable artists and traditions from around the world, then reproduce them using carefully sourced images, archival giclée printing, and fine art papers from Hahnemühle.

Unframed prints travel rolled in a protective tube. This is the standard and safest way to ship a print: a rolled sheet cannot be creased or have its corners knocked in transit. Framed prints arrive ready to hang.
Hahnemühle paper is very delicate. Its soft, textured matte surface marks far more easily than ordinary poster paper, so handle it with care. Wash and dry your hands first, or wear clean cotton gloves if you have them. Hold the sheet by its edges with both hands, and never touch the printed surface.
To flatten your print:
Frame your print behind glass as soon as you can, and keep it flat until then. Hang it out of direct sunlight and away from damp and heat, such as bathrooms and radiators. If it gathers dust, use a soft, dry brush; never water or cleaning products.
Unsure about anything? Any professional framer will know how to handle and flatten your print, and you can always write to us before you unroll it.
Our principal fine-art papers include Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations, fine detail and tonal depth.
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival works where source quality varies considerably.
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
“I am not just impressed; I'm blown away by the quality and overall experience. The wood grain in the frame is beautiful and the print quality is superb.”
