Gion Nankai (祇園南海, 1677–1751) was a Japanese Confucian scholar, painter, and poet — one of the founding figures of the Nanga (literati painting) tradition in Japan, which introduced the aesthetic values of Chinese scholarly painting to a Japanese audience. Serving the Kishu domain and studying Chinese literati culture with deep seriousness, he produced paintings, calligraphy, and poetry that blended Confucian learning with the refined pleasure of ink and brush. His calligraphic works, in the manner of the Chinese literati, convey a scholarly spirit and formal elegance that remain central to the Japanese ink art tradition.
