Turquoise ripples glitter across a still alpine lake

Broad horizontal bands of pale lavender-grey sky and misty violet hills meet a glassy lake surface flecked with hundreds of small turquoise brushstrokes suggesting sunlit ripples. A dark rocky outcrop breaks the horizon at the upper right. Klimt signs his name in blue at the lower left corner. Painted in 1900 on the Attersee, a lake in the Salzkammergut region of Austria.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
