A sleeping infant swaddled in a mountain of patterned fabric

A round-faced baby with pale skin and light curls peeks out from beneath layers of patchwork bedding rendered in dense, overlapping patterns — orange, blue, green, red and white fabrics with polka dots, stripes and floral motifs. The child's face and hands are the only bare skin visible; the rest of the canvas is filled edge to edge with the crib's quilted textiles, painted in short, thick strokes.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
