A darkly clad actor stands in shadow beneath a theatrical inscription
Gustav Klimt — Josef Lewinsky as Carlos in Clavigo | Fine Art Print
Note: Framed prints require slightly longer production time
A man in a black frock coat, white cravat and dark trousers stands in a deep, dark niche, one arm bent with his hand resting near his chest. Above the niche, an inscription reads JOSEF LEWINSKY ALS CARLOS IN CLAVIGO in gold lettering. A flowering vine climbs the left border, and pale, ghostly pastel figures — an ensemble of theatrical faces — appear at the right. A small gilt tripod stand with two rings stands at the lower right.
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
