An elegant standing portrait in a shimmering blue gown

Emilie Flöge stands three-quarter length against a soft brown-green ground, one hand resting on her hip. Her broad collar and shoulders are covered in a dense pattern of blue lozenges and pale ovals, and her long gown falls in cascades of dark blue swirls, spirals and small gold squares. Her dark hair forms a soft halo. In the lower right, Klimt's name and the date 1902 are lettered in green on a small gold square above a green panel.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
