A rose garden dissolves into a shimmering veil of leaves

Layers of short green, violet and gold brushstrokes build a dense screen of foliage filling almost the entire square canvas, broken only by a strip of pale sky at the top edge. Two slender, moss-mottled tree trunks rise from a grassy foreground scattered with clusters of pink, white and deep red rose blooms. Klimt signs his name in green paint at the lower left. Painted around 1905, one of several garden landscapes from that period.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
