Four quick pencil studies of a clenched fist

Four pencil studies of a clenched fist are arranged in two loose rows on tan paper, each drawn from a slightly different angle with quick, searching contour lines. The knuckles and finger joints are built up with overlapping strokes, while the wrists trail off into a few open lines. The paper is otherwise bare around the sketches.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
