Infancy, youth and old age stand together against a dark ground

Three generations stand together against a mottled dark ground: a stooped, grey-haired woman covers her face with one arm at left, a young woman with flowers in her hair cradles a sleeping child at centre, and the child rests drowsily against her shoulder. Ornamental patches of red, orange and gold circles, spirals and lozenges cover the lower portion of the canvas like a decorative textile, while the background behind the figures is rendered in dry, scumbled greys and browns.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, which he co-founded in 1897. His golden period portraits and allegories — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — combine mosaic-like ornament and gold leaf with an unflinching treatment of the body, and his square landscapes of the Attersee are among the most serene paintings of the era. His works are held by the Belvedere in Vienna, the Neue Galerie in New York and the Leopold Museum.
