James Ward (1769–1859) was a British painter and engraver celebrated for his dramatic animal paintings and sublime landscapes. His monumental Gordale Scar (1812–1814) is one of the great achievements of British Romantic landscape painting; his animal portraits brought a new psychological authority to a genre previously considered decorative.
