Félix Vallotton — Woman in Red

A man in armour and a red surcoat kneels in prayer by his shield
Each frame is made to order by one of our framing workshops, so the exact shade and profile may vary slightly from the photos.
Simon de Varie kneels in profile, palms pressed together, in plate armour under a red surcoat sown with gold fleurs-de-lis, a sword slanting from his hip. Behind him a woman in a tall pointed headdress and blue gown supports a crested helmet and a red and blue shield. A violet-grey curtain hangs across the room and ochre tiles recede underfoot. The border is a gold trellis climbed by blue flowers, with crowned shields at the corners and two gold scrolls lettered in red, above and below.
The leaf belongs to the multi-page frontispiece of Varie's own prayer book and faces a miniature of the Virgin enthroned with the Child, to whom he prays. Fouquet gave the floor tiles of both pages a single vanishing point, so the two figures seem to share one room. Varie had risen from the merchant class as an official of the French royal treasury, and the arms and mottoes in the border mark his new noble rank.
The original: a leaf from the Hours of Simon de Varie, tempera colours, gold paint, gold leaf and ink, painted by Jean Fouquet in Paris or Tours in 1455; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
Jean Fouquet, born in Tours about 1415–20, was a French painter and illuminator who, after a stay in Rome around 1445 where he painted Pope Eugenius IV, brought the ideas and techniques of Italian Renaissance art into French painting. He worked for King Charles VII and was later named court painter to Louis XI, running a large workshop that produced panel paintings, portraits and manuscripts. A leaf from a book of hours made for Simon de Varie, painted in 1455, is in the J. Paul Getty Museum.
Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper and arrive in a handmade solid-wood frame with low-reflection glazing, ready to hang. Ships worldwide with free delivery to 30+ countries.

9 Art Prints was founded by author Arif Anwar around two simple ideas: that great art should reach far beyond the familiar Western canon, and that fine art reproductions should be made with exceptional materials.
So we seek out remarkable artists and traditions from around the world, then reproduce them using carefully sourced images, archival giclée printing, and fine art papers from Hahnemühle.

Our principal fine-art papers include Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations, fine detail and tonal depth.
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival works where source quality varies considerably.
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
“I am not just impressed; I'm blown away by the quality and overall experience. The wood grain in the frame is beautiful and the print quality is superb.”
