Black silk and long pearls against a rose-red armchair

A woman sits in a deep rose-red armchair in a black evening gown with lace sleeves, a long rope of pearls falling to her waist and a pale blue-white flower pinned in her dark hair. One arm is bent with the hand at her hip, the other lies in her lap. The upholstery is worked in raw strokes of crimson, dusty pink and white, and the black of the skirt spreads across the whole lower half of the canvas.

Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.
