A wall of deep blue water between pale sand and a green headland

The canvas is divided into three flat bands: a strip of cream sand across the bottom, a great field of blue water worked in short horizontal strokes with warm ochre showing through, and above it the headland in olive, dark green and bare ochre-white cliff. The sky is a narrow strip of pale grey at the very top. There is no figure and almost no detail — only the weight of the blue. Signed and dated at the lower left.

Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.
