A fisherman sits in profile in a broad olive oilskin hat, a white shirt with the sleeves pushed back, a dark waistcoat and an olive oilskin coat over his shoulder, one black boot planted in front of him. His hands are raised and cupped around something left unpainted. Sorolla leaves the primed canvas bare around him, laying in only a band of blue sea and a brown shape at the upper right. Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.
