A young man walks up out of the shallows carrying a broad yellow wicker basket on his hip, heaped with silver-blue fish and covered with a white cloth that trails behind him. He wears a wide straw hat with a green band and dark striped trunks, and looks back over his shoulder. Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.
