A red-railed jetty on the Retiro lake under a breezy blue sky

A wooden jetty painted brick red runs out from the right bank into the still lake, with a russet gangway leading down to it and a few small figures standing at the rail. Rowing boats lie moored beside it, one green and one red-brown, and a figure in blue stands at the jetty beside them. Behind, dark green trees close the far bank, broken by a cream pavilion with a round arch and a pale conical roof at the left. The sky is pale blue with loose white cloud. Inscribed with a dedication and signed at the lower left.

Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.
