A woman in a tall feathered hat and fur-trimmed black cloak sits on a wooden chair holding up a small cup, an ice skate lying on the floor beside her. Johann Georg van Caspel (1870–1928) was an Amsterdam painter, poster designer and architect who worked in the Jugendstil of the Belle Époque. After studying at the Rijksakademie and winning the Willink van Collenprijs in 1891, he painted figures and portraits until the Amsterdam printers Amand commissioned a series of posters from him, work from which was included in Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. He also designed book covers, calendars and picture books, and after settling in Laren in 1903 built more than thirty country houses in Het Gooi. His work is held by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Drents Museum.
