A wreathed, wind-blown woman strides across swirling clouds

A long-haired woman crowned with a small floral wreath strides across swirling, wave-like clouds, one arm raised into wind-blown drapery that streams the length of the print. Rendered in rose-red and olive-green woodcut ink on cream paper, her bare torso and legs are visible, a bare foot resting on a dark curved globe at the base; a pale disc glows at the upper right, partly veiled by the drapery.

Johannes Josephus Aarts (1871–1934) contributed to a renewal of printmaking in the Netherlands. Trained at the academy in The Hague, he worked mainly in wood engraving until about 1900 before taking up other print techniques, depicting farmworkers, dyke workers, tramps and beggars, and later visionary work with apocalyptic scenes. He taught in The Hague and succeeded Pieter Dupont as professor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and also made sculptures as studies for his prints. His work is held by the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
