A crowned woman with a crescent ornament and a pale blue halo stands at the right, gathering a pale cloth at her breast, while a bare man kneels astride a great dark bird below her, both arms raised. A line of women stand at the left, some with hands lifted to their faces. Stylised lily blooms grow at the lower left above a band of waves. The woodcut is printed in sage green and tan, with small teal accents in the drapery.

Johannes Josephus Aarts (1871–1934) contributed to a renewal of printmaking in the Netherlands. Trained at the academy in The Hague, he worked mainly in wood engraving until about 1900 before taking up other print techniques, depicting farmworkers, dyke workers, tramps and beggars, and later visionary work with apocalyptic scenes. He taught in The Hague and succeeded Pieter Dupont as professor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and also made sculptures as studies for his prints. His work is held by the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing. Available handframed in FSC-certified wood with optional float glass, or unframed. Ships worldwide with free delivery to 30+ countries.
