A woman with long, wind-blown hair and a draped, off-the-shoulder gown stands with her head tilted to one side, fine radiating lines fanning out around her like an aura against a dark ground. A great pale crescent arcs behind her, and her lowered hand reaches toward a small crescent at the lower left; a tall lit candle stands beside her on an ornate holder. Johannes Josephus Aarts (1871–1934) contributed to a renewal of printmaking in the Netherlands. Trained at the academy in The Hague, he worked mainly in wood engraving until about 1900 before taking up other print techniques, depicting farmworkers, dyke workers, tramps and beggars, and later visionary work with apocalyptic scenes. He taught in The Hague and succeeded Pieter Dupont as professor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and also made sculptures as studies for his prints. His work is held by the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
