A masked dancer flings confetti beside a red-clad jester

A masked woman in a flowing yellow dress and matching tights raises one arm to fling confetti into the air, her bodice slipping to bare one shoulder and part of her chest. Beside her a grinning figure in a red-and-white jester's costume and pointed cap reaches toward her, and a top-hatted silhouette and other revellers crowd behind them against a pale green sky scattered with streamers. Small red and white flowers are pinned at her waist. Lettering across the top names the illustrated Paris journal Au Quartier Latin.

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was the father of the modern poster. A trained lithographer, he set up his own press in Paris in 1866 and over the next four decades produced more than a thousand colour posters for theatres, dance halls, perfumes and lamp oil, populated by the laughing, airborne women Parisians called Chérettes. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1890 for creating a new branch of art. His posters are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
