A dancer sweeps by in flame-orange, wing-like billowing skirts

A dancer in a flame-orange and yellow costume sweeps across the sheet, her billowing, wing-like skirts and a great swirl of green veil caught mid-motion against a black ground. One arm lifts overhead with curled fingers as she turns, her hair swept back in loose curls. Bold red lettering across the top names the Folies-Bergère; her name, Loïe Fuller, fills bold yellow-orange letters at the foot of the sheet, and the artist's cursive signature appears at the left beside her skirts.

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was the father of the modern poster. A trained lithographer, he set up his own press in Paris in 1866 and over the next four decades produced more than a thousand colour posters for theatres, dance halls, perfumes and lamp oil, populated by the laughing, airborne women Parisians called Chérettes. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1890 for creating a new branch of art. His posters are held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
