Kawamura Keiko is a Japanese calligrapher working in the tradition of Zen-inspired brushwork — a contemporary practitioner of the art of shodo (the way of the brush) in which calligraphy is understood not merely as writing but as a direct expression of mind and spirit. Zen calligraphy, descended from the great monastic calligraphers of medieval Japan and China, uses the brush to capture a single concentrated moment of awareness — bold, immediate, and often paradoxical in its message, as in the koan-like statement Laziness is Truth.
