Kishi Chikudō (1826–1897) was a Meiji-era Japanese painter and the acknowledged master of tiger painting in 19th-century Japan. Head of the Kishi school in Kyoto, he produced studies of tigers — alone, in mountain streams, alert, resting — of extraordinary anatomical confidence and painterly authority. His tiger paintings were widely reproduced and admired, and he remains the reference point for the Japanese tiger as a subject of fine art.
