Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) was a German-British artist who invented Merz — his own form of collage, assemblage, and total art — and became one of the most original voices in the Dadaist and Constructivist avant-gardes. Rejected by the Berlin Dada group, he built his own movement from found materials, typography, and commercial ephemera, producing works that anticipate Pop Art by three decades. His poster designs and typographic works brought the Bauhaus-influenced modernist aesthetic to a distinctly literary, idiosyncratic sensibility.
