Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) was a German artist best known for his invention of Merz — an idiosyncratic strain of Dada in which discarded materials, clippings, tickets, and scraps were assembled into collages of surprising beauty. Rejected by the Berlin Dada circle, he created his own universe. His collage works — raw, tender, and formally sophisticated — anticipate both Abstract Expressionism and Conceptual art and are now held in major museum collections worldwide.
