A white spike and yellow fan on black, for the 1923 exhibition

On a black card a tall white spike rises from the lower centre, drawn to a fine point at the foot and a blunt one at the top. A broad yellow fan opens behind it from the left, its inner wedge stippled where the yellow thins over the white. A red rectangle sits low across the spike, half of it stippled to orange where it overlaps. A slim turquoise bar leans in from the upper left, and fine black lines rule a narrow cone through the middle. Lettering sits at the top right and lower right in pale sans-serif capitals.

László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) was a Hungarian painter, photographer and designer and one of the defining teachers of the Bauhaus, where he led the preliminary course and the metal workshop from 1923 to 1928. He worked in paint, photography, typography and light, pioneering the cameraless photogram and setting out his ideas in Malerei, Fotografie, Film (1925). Driven out of Germany, he worked in Amsterdam and London before settling in Chicago, where he founded the New Bauhaus in 1937. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Art Institute of Chicago and Tate.
