Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) was an Italian-born poster artist based in Paris who became the most influential advertising designer of the early 20th century — the inventor of the modern poster. Breaking with the decorative complexity of Art Nouveau, he developed a bold, immediately legible style built on a single vivid image against a dark background, creating advertising works of such memorable power that they are collected as fine art. His posters for Campari, Cinzano, Bitter Campari, and Cachou Lajaunie remain among the most recognised images of pre-war European visual culture.
