Rendered in soft sepia-grey tones with gold accents, three greyhounds stretch forward at a run: two black, one pale cream, each wearing an orange-gold collar. A blonde woman in a flowing white gown and fur wrap runs beside them on high heels, one hand reaching toward the collar of the dog nearest her and the other raising a gold riding whip overhead. Her curled hair and long skirts stream behind her in the wind. The signature Louis Icart appears at the lower right.
Louis Icart (1888–1950) was a French painter, etcher and illustrator whose prints of elegant, often sensual women were in vogue during the Art Deco period. Born in Toulouse, he came to Paris in 1907, drew fashion sketches and catalogues for couture houses, and after flying as a fighter pilot in the First World War worked mainly in aquatint and drypoint, often issuing separate editions for Europe and America. He made more than 500 engravings and illustrated over 30 books. His work is held by the Finnish National Gallery and the Vanderbilt Museum of Art.
