Ludwig Hohlwein (1874–1949) was the dominant figure in German poster design during the first half of the 20th century. His distinctive style — bold flat planes of colour, rich texture, and a graphic authority that owed something to both Japanese printmaking and Art Deco — made him the most copied poster artist in Europe. His travel and advertising posters from the 1910s and 1920s are among the finest examples of applied graphic art from the Weimar era.
