Félix Vallotton — Woman in Red

A mother in an orange mantle holds an open book for her daughter
Each frame is made to order by one of our framing workshops, so the exact shade and profile may vary slightly from the photos.
Saint Anne, in a white veil and an orange mantle over a violet-blue gown, bends to hold an open book for the young Virgin, who kneels in a blue dress with long fair hair and grips the book in both hands. Both have gold haloes. Behind them a grey stone wall crosses a lawn of bright green grass beneath a ground of tiny gold, blue and red squares. Sprays of gold ivy leaf and curling pink, blue, orange and green acanthus fill the border.
Saint Anne's teaching of her daughter is told in The Golden Legend, a popular medieval collection of saints' lives. The museum notes that the picture also reflects the use of books of hours such as this one as primers for children, and that the glittering chequered background was a typical decorative motif in illumination around 1400. The book was made in Rouen or in England for an English patron.
The original: a leaf from a book of hours, tempera colours, gold leaf and ink, made in France or England about 1430–1440; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
The Master of Sir John Fastolf is the name scholars give an illuminator active in France and England during the Hundred Years War, after a manuscript he made for the English soldier Sir John Fastolf about 1450. He worked in Paris with the Boucicaut Master before 1420, then in English-held Rouen, and moved to England before Rouen fell to the French in 1449. His boldly outlined, expressive figures and patterned landscapes were easy to copy and long influenced painting in Rouen; a leaf with Saint Anne teaching the Virgin to read is in the J. Paul Getty Museum.
Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper. 9 Art Prints was founded by author Arif Anwar around two simple ideas: that great art should reach far beyond the familiar Western canon, and that fine art reproductions should be made with exceptional materials.
So we seek out remarkable artists and traditions from around the world, then reproduce them using carefully sourced images, archival giclée printing, and fine art papers from Hahnemühle.

Our principal fine-art papers include Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations, fine detail and tonal depth.
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival works where source quality varies considerably.
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
“I am not just impressed; I'm blown away by the quality and overall experience. The wood grain in the frame is beautiful and the print quality is superb.”
