Saint Jerome, white-bearded and bare to the waist with a blue cloth knotted at his hips, kneels before a small crucifix and a lit candle set on a rock ledge beside a skull, a stone gripped in one hand. His red cardinal's hat and robe hang from a broken tree behind him, and a brown lion lies in the foreground, looking out. Beyond, a river winds past a pale church toward blue mountains. A painted gold frame of columns, urns and scrollwork surrounds the scene.
The miniature opens the Getty Epistles, where it introduces a preface to Saint Paul's letters that was once thought to be Jerome's own. The museum notes how the painter set the saint's body against a band of dark green, cutting him off from the distant countryside, and identifies the stone as the one with which he beat his chest during four years of penance in the Syrian desert.

The Master of the Getty Epistles is the name scholars give one of four leading artists in a group of French illuminators working together in Tours or Paris in the 1520s and 1530s, after a manuscript of the Epistles of Saint Paul in the J. Paul Getty Museum. He later worked independently in the 1540s, and his figures stand out for their vigorous bodies and individual, sympathetic faces, drawing on Flemish drawings and German prints. What paper do you use?
Our principal fine-art papers include
Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and
Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm.
German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works
exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag
has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly
detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than
using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
What does “giclée” mean?
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and
high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations,
fine detail and tonal depth.
Will large prints still look sharp?
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying
artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and
prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival
works where source quality varies considerably.
What about your framed prints?
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Will the colours look exactly like my screen?
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical
to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for
print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece
a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
