Otto Freundlich (1878–1943) was a pioneering German abstract painter and sculptor whose radically non-representational work placed him among the earliest practitioners of pure abstraction in European art. His compositions of interlocking colour planes, developed independently of Mondrian and Kandinsky, were declared "degenerate" by the Nazis. He died in the Sobibor extermination camp in 1943.
