A colour woodcut printed in black, ochre-yellow and red-orange ink on cream paper. A scalloped, cloud-shaped cartouche at the top centre carries lettering, with two smaller framed vignette scenes beneath it: a seated figure among tall trees at the left and a crouching figure on a rock at the right. Below, two Tahitian figures in red wrapped garments walk through a landscape, one seen from behind in the foreground with a dog at her feet; a dark animal appears at the upper right, and flowering sprigs frame both margins.
Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) left a career as a stockbroker to paint, worked beside Van Gogh in Arles in 1888, and led the Pont-Aven painters toward flat colour and simplified form. From 1891 he lived mostly in Tahiti and the Marquesas, where the figures, colour and myth of Polynesia became his subject. His synthetist style shaped the Nabis, Fauvism and Expressionism. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
