Three women in orange pareu gather by a Tahitian stream

Three women stand outdoors near a stream. At the left, a woman wrapped in a white cloth at the waist leans forward, looking down. The two at centre and right wear matching orange-red pareu and wear white flowers in their dark hair; one rests a hand near her cheek, the other glances back over her shoulder. Behind them, dense green foliage and a tree in white blossom against a soft pink ground; the ground is yellow-green, with dark rounded shapes at the water's edge. Signed 'P Gauguin .96' at the lower right.

Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) left a career as a stockbroker to paint, worked beside Van Gogh in Arles in 1888, and led the Pont-Aven painters toward flat colour and simplified form. From 1891 he lived mostly in Tahiti and the Marquesas, where the figures, colour and myth of Polynesia became his subject. His synthetist style shaped the Nabis, Fauvism and Expressionism. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
