Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a Swiss-German painter and one of the most theoretically rigorous and playfully inventive artists of the 20th century. Teaching at the Bauhaus alongside Kandinsky, he developed a systematic theory of pictorial form set out in his Pedagogical Sketchbook and Thinking Eye — an approach that saw line, colour, and rhythm as the fundamental language of visual art. His works — intimate, precise, often humorous — combine the rigour of Bauhaus formal analysis with a fairy-tale lightness that is entirely, unmistakably his own.
