A tiered palace rises in pink and lavender under blue-tiled roofs, crowned by a small domed pavilion. A young man in a gold crown-shaped cap sits in a red-curtained balcony near the top. Below, arched windows carry dark lattice grilles and gold doors open above white steps; an elderly bearded man in green sits at the base beside a round portrait medallion. At the left, a garden of cypress trees and flowering plants rises against a golden sky, with a diamond-shaped portrait of a robed figure hung among the leaves.
Persian miniature painting reached its height in the manuscript workshops of Herat, Tabriz, Shiraz and Isfahan between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. Painted in opaque watercolour and gold on polished paper, a folio combined text, illumination and image on a single page, and the finest illustrated copies of the Shahnameh, the Khamsa of Nizami and the Conference of the Birds were commissioned by Timurid, Safavid and Mughal courts. Leaves from these dispersed manuscripts are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Library, the Chester Beatty Library and the Freer Gallery of Art.
