Félix Vallotton — Woman in Red

An armoured rider in a red hat above a soldier thrown from his horse
Each frame is made to order by one of our framing workshops, so the exact shade and profile may vary slightly from the photos.
A letter S, rose-pink above and blue below, holds two scenes. In the upper curve a rider in profile wears a tall red hat and plate armour with a tunic of gold scales over green, white and rose stripes; his grey horse has a silvered head-guard and red trappings set with gold suns, and two helmeted soldiers follow. Below, Saul, in full armour, tumbles head first to the ground as his brown horse collapses in blue harness studded with gold. A wooded hill and a pale castle close the distance.
The museum reads the upright rider's green, white and red as the colours of both the Gonzaga and the Este families and suggests he may be the patron who ordered the gradual, for a family chapel or a church under his protection. The initial was closely trimmed from that choir book; the rest of the story, in which Saul takes the name Paul, was left for its users to supply.
The original: a historiated initial cut from a gradual, tempera colours, gold leaf, gold paint, silver leaf and ink, made probably in the Veneto, possibly Verona, about 1440–1450; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
Antonio Pisano, known as Pisanello (by 1395–about 1455), was an Italian painter, draughtsman and medallist who trained as a goldsmith, worked with Gentile da Fabriano and served the courts of Mantua, Ferrara, Pavia, Milan and Naples, above all the Gonzaga and Este families. He is credited with creating the personal commemorative medal, beginning with one for the Byzantine emperor John VIII Palaeologus. An initial S with the Conversion of Saint Paul attributed to him and the Master of the Antiphonal Q of San Giorgio Maggiore is in the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Master of the Antiphonal Q of San Giorgio Maggiore is the name scholars give the illuminator of one of the choir books made for the Benedictine monks of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Active in northern Italy from about the 1440s to the 1460s, he looked closely at the art of Pisanello, and an initial S with the Conversion of Saint Paul attributed to the two of them is in the J. Paul Getty Museum.

9 Art Prints was founded by author Arif Anwar around two simple ideas: that great art should reach far beyond the familiar Western canon, and that fine art reproductions should be made with exceptional materials.
So we seek out remarkable artists and traditions from around the world, then reproduce them using carefully sourced images, archival giclée printing, and fine art papers from Hahnemühle.

Our principal fine-art papers include Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations, fine detail and tonal depth.
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival works where source quality varies considerably.
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
“I am not just impressed; I'm blown away by the quality and overall experience. The wood grain in the frame is beautiful and the print quality is superb.”
