Josep Tapiró i Baró (1836–1913) was a Spanish painter who settled in Tangier in the 1870s and devoted forty years to painting the people, architecture, and daily life of Morocco with an intimacy no passing visitor could have achieved. His Moorish portraits — studies of individual men and women in their domestic and religious environments — have a directness and psychological depth that sets them apart from the fantasy Orientalism of his Parisian contemporaries. His works are held in major collections of Orientalist and Spanish art.
