Matsumoto Hoji (active late 18th century) was an Edo-period painter associated with the Kishi school, best known today for a single extraordinary work: a triptych of three frogs, painted in ink with such spontaneous confidence and comic observation that it became one of the most beloved images in Japanese art history. Now held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Three Frogs is a work that seems to defy the gravity of great art — perfectly simple, perfectly observed, and perfectly funny.
